Vernon was born on September 17, 1931, in Auglaize County, Ohio, to Martin Sunderland and Minnie (Brown) Sunderland. On Saturday, February 27, 1954, at St. Gerards Church, he married Mary Lou DeVore. She survives in Lima.
He was employed by International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union. He was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church and the VFW Post 1275. He was a United States Army Veteran.
He is survived by: a daughter, Lynda Burkholder; and six grandchildren, Kevin J. Kuhn, Angela Sunderland, Amy Sunderland, Brian Sunderland, Amanda Sunderland and Abigail Sunderland; a brother, Charles (Marsha) Sunderland of Spencerville, OH; a daughter-in-law, Julie Sunderland; three sisters, his twin, Vera (Leonard) Elshoff of Spencerville, OH., Waneta (Joe) Meier of Cridersville, OH. and Carol (Lee) Klima of Wapakoneta, OH.
He was preceded in death by: a son, Tommy Sunderland; three brothers, Carl "Gus" Sunderland, Harold "Dutch" Sunderland, and Roger Sunderland ; two sisters, Ruth Meeker and Mildred Tangeman; a brother-in-law, Everett "Smokey" Welch.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014 at 7:00 P.M.at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, with Chaplain Dick Coon presiding. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. prior to the time of service. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 1275 immediately following the memorial service.
