83, died peacefully at 5:10 PM on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, surrounded by his loving family at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima, Ohio.
Vincent was born on June 11, 1930, in Lima, Ohio, to the late James DeVita and Mary (Bonanno) DeVita.
Vincent married Gertrude Ganshirt on August 27, 1955 in Lima. She survives in Lima. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. He had worked at Nickel Plate R.R., Ford Motor Co. and retired from Westinghouse after more than 25 years in 1990. He was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church. He was an usher and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a committed and devoted husband, father, grandfather and Catholic. He was instrumental in starting a program at Westinghouse where he sold candy to employees and later used that money to buy food baskets for the poor at Christmas time. Because of this he was affectionately referred to as the "Candyman".
He is survived by: two sons, Stephen (Marija) DeVita of Purcellville, VA., Michael G. (Marilyn) DeVita, of Lima, OH; two daughters, Carmen (Calvin) Long, of Grove City, OH, and Cynthia R. (Gary) Gerhardt, of Columbus, OH; twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He is preceded in death by: three brothers, Matthew DeVita, Jack DeVita, and James DeVita; two sisters, Pauline Drake, and Irene Wysowaty.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, March 28, 2014 at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home in Lima, Ohio.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at St. Gerard Catholic Church with Father Jim Szobonya officiating.
Interment will be in Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima, Ohio with a VFW Military Rite conducted by Post 1275.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Gerard Catholic Church.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the numerous doctors, nurses and techs that cared for Vincent at St. Rita's and to Dr's. Balusu, Buch and Rahman and their staff especially Connie Youngpeter, RN.
A special thanks to Patty at St. Rita's Homecare and the staff at Lima/Allen County Paramedics for ALWAYS treating dad with dignity and respect.
