Warren Charles.Jacobs, businessman, botanist and community leader, died on Saturday, February 4, 2012, at St. Rita's Medical Center . He was 91.
Born January 5, 1921, in Hereford, Texas to Richard and Helen Gress Jacobs who preceded him in death. On June 26, 1948 he married Virginia Lewis Jacobs and she survives.
Mr. Jacobs was a 1939 graduate of Central High School in Lima. he attended Ohio Northern University and then Ohio State University in Columbus where he received the degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Master of Science in Botany. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society and Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served as a Naval Agent and graduated from the Naval Language School at the University of Colorado in Boulder, learning the Japanese language.
In Lima, he joined his parents in farming and in retail china and furniture businesses, retiring in 1992 after Jacobs China Company celebrated its 75th anniversary. He was a member of Market Street Prtesbyterian Church where he taught and was ordained as an elder; he also served as the Clerk of Session, Trustee and Superintendent of Sunday Schools.
He was a member of the Lima Farmers Club, Amil Tellers of Dramatics theater group, served on the boards of Girl Scouts, Crossroad Crisis Center, was a commissioner of the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District, and a member of directors of the Allen County Museum. Upon retirement, he was an avid traveler visiting the cultures of 46 countries. He was a master gardener and environmentalist, loving the land, forest and teaching others of its flora and fauna. A lifetime learner, he cherished an intellectual life, reading broadly, and was well known in the communiy as a vintner and naturalist.
Surviving are four children, Ann Elizabeth Jacobs of Lima John Richard Jacobs of Seattle, WA Holly Louise Jacobs of Athens, Oh and George Warren Jacobs of Concord, NC; eight grandchildren Whitney Jacobs Bush of Lima, Andre, Pia and Juliet Jacobs of Seattle, WA; May, Laura and Eben Jacobs Tobar of Athens, OH; and John Talton Jacobs of Concord, NC.
A Witness of Service of the Resurrection will be at Market St. Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Mr. Jacobs' son, The Rev. George Jacobs will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, February 6, 2012, at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home,
