William "Bill" C. Avery

August 18, 1935 — August 2, 2024

Lima

William “Bill” C. Avery, 88, left his worldly body in a peaceful sleep on Friday, August 2, 2024, at 12:13 a.m. at Springview Manor.

Bill was born on August 18, 1935, in Lima, in a house on a hill on Harding Hwy, to Mary L. Baker and Charles Avery. He was raised by his mom and stepfather, Lawrence C. Baker. On June 12, 1954, Bill and Joyce M. (Thomas) Avery were united in marriage. They were 1953 graduates of South High School.

Bill is survived by his son, Thomas W. Avery (Jan); daughter, Ronda (Avery) (Brian); 3 grandchildren: Erica (Avery) Marshall (Josh), Jessica (Maginnity) Schelb (Kevin), and Patrick Maginnity; 5 great-grandchildren: Lexie, Cole, & Luke Marshall, and Maggie & Katherine Schelb; his sister, Carol (Dick) Presar; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bill was also preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; grandson, Matt Avery; his sister, Dorothy (Guy) Lawson; mother & father-in-law, Harry & Leona Thomas; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim & Dorothy Thomas and Joan & Jack Coon.

Bill started his working career at Siferds Funeral Home and Butler’s Drug Store. He then joined the U.S. Army from 1956-1957, serving in Germany. He worked for Prudential, Moore Business Forms and retired from American Trim (Superior Metals).

For over 50 years, Bill took tickets for Lima Senior High School football and basketball games. Bill was active for many years in Lima City School PTA. He was also active in High Street United Methodist Church (later Westside United Methodist Church), serving on boards and singing in the church choir. Bill was known for fixing things. Something broke, he most likely had the screw, nail, or part to fix it.

The most important thing to Bill was family. He sat through many music concerts, dance recitals and a lot of sporting events. He and Joyce were the first to arrive at family gatherings and the last to leave.

Many thanks to all who took care of Bill at Springview Manor. He really enjoyed the staff and residents he made friends with. And thanks to Interim Healthcare Hospice for all they did.

The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, Ohio. The funeral service will begin at 1pm on Friday, August 9, 2024, at the funeral home. Pastor Dan Lee will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westside United Methodist Church.
